Introduction:

For many people in society, at the level of day-to-day' common sense’, the family and family relationships occupy a rather special place in their lives. Most of us see our own families on a regular basis and we often hear politicians and other such people praise the family as asocial institution- or lament the loss of ‘traditional family values’. Given this central position that the family occupies in society, it is perhaps not surprising to find that for many sociologists the family should occupy a special place in sociological study.
