Introduction:
For many people in society, at
the level of day-to-day' common sense¡¦, the family
and family relationships occupy a rather special place
in their lives. Most of us see our own families on a regular
basis and we often hear politicians and other such
people praise the family as asocial institution- or lament
the loss of ¡¥traditional family values¡¦. Given this central
position that the family occupies in society, it is perhaps not
surprising to find that for many sociologists the family should
occupy a special place in sociological study.
